picapiedrasdespedidadesolteradepebblesxxx, a text-based roleplaying game, was made by Daniel Thomas as part of his Game In Public project at Nottingham Trent University. It is a web browser-based role playing game that uses text input to control the character's actions and decisions in order to explore moral choices within a fictional world. The young man who created this interactive experience had the idea for picapiedrasdespedidadesolteradepebblesxxx while at university and started to create it as an art project. The project was intended to make people aware of the possibilities of interactive storytelling. It was Daniel Thomas' biggest and most complex game yet and is a tribute to the old text adventure games such as Pick Up Sticks and Monster Party. Thomas used an old style of RPG scripting that allowed players to use input such as "Drop stone" to interact with the game. As a result, there were no graphics or sounds; however, this did not take away from its immersive nature. At specific times in the game, actions by the player caused significant changes within the story's reality. For instance, at one point in the story if a character tried to eat or drink something they might drop dead. The story of picapiedrasdespedidadesolteradepebblesxxx is a classic, Shakespearean narrative that features a young man trying to find love and happiness among many obstacles. Though the player's choices in the game ultimately end with death, the full story of picapiedrasdespedidadesolteradepebblesxxx was never fully told as it is an installation for a gallery exhibition. The original version can now be found at Nottingham Trent University's Public Art Collection as part of the Game In Public project. There were two versions of this game created. The first version was installed at the Nottingham School of Art and Design Gallery. This first version of the game was not finished as it was created to be part of the exhibition. The second version was installed at the National Media Museum Gallery, also in Nottingham. Unlike its predecessor, this version is fully finished and can be played without being an integral part of any art exhibition.The Game In Public project aimed to bring video games out into public spaces around Nottingham. This project provided a testbed for exploring new forms of interactive storytelling using games. Though using text-based interaction has its limitations, many people enjoyed picapiedrasdespedidadesolteradepebblesxxx due to its style and entertainment value. The Game In Public website said of it, "The game allows one to explore a constantly changing world, where the choices the player makes have an immediate effect on the character they are controlling. Unlike other games, this game allows for no retries. This forces the player to learn from their mistakes and experience the consequences of their actions. This adds a level to realism that would not be present in other games."
